What is weathering?
In general, weathering is the decomposition of materials through direct contact with the planet's atmosphere. On these sites, the emphasis is given to polymer weathering and weathering of products and equipment.
The main environmental factors in polymer weathering are solar radiation, temperature and moisture. These three factors act often with airborne pollutants, biological phenomena and acid rain. There are a lot of different cause-effect-relationships which make it very difficult to predict or calculate the durability of a material in its environment.
Therefore weathering tests are necessary during the product development steps to prevent early deterioration and product failure before the expected end of life.
